Pretty well since we got together, my girlfriend’s been hassling me to cut down on smoking. I’ve got to admit, she’s not totally out of line. I know that I make the apartment smell up pretty bad when I get home every day from work. I don’t even smoke in the apartment, but the cigarette smoke just clings to my clothes and seems to get into everything.

Plus, I pack and deliver produce for a living, so it’s not a great idea smelling like a chimney when I’m making deliveries to clients.

The biggest problem I’ve had with cutting back is that I tend to smoke like a chimney at work, because half my shift is either spent waiting to work, or in the van making deliveries. When I’m not busy at work I smoke because I’m bored. And then I smoke when I drive because it’s stressful. All in all, since I’m going to be at this job for at least another year or two, quitting smoking altogether really doesn’t seem to be that great of an option at this point.

One of my co-workers tried a brand of electronic cigarettes last year and didn’t have a great experience with them. He said they they didn’t charge for long, that they leaked, and that they didn’t last. Because of his stories, I never really considered electronic cigarettes to be an option.

Apparently my girlfriend’s friends weren’t having the same issues, because they let her know about eSmokes. When I got home from work the one day she had their web site up and we checked it out.

I tried to do a little math in my head to figure out the cost difference between getting the eSmokes my normal packs of cigarettes. While the price of the starter kit would probably be more than the smokes I’d save before I needed to order more cartridges, once I ordered a refill pack I’d start to see the savings. And with me smoking every 1-2 days, any savings are welcome.

When I got them out of the box I followed the instructions and charged them in the wall outlet while my girlfriend and I watched tv. Once they were done I brought them out and put them in the truck’s glove box so I could start using them first thing the next day.

The next morning I got to work at 5am, as usual, and was fumbling for my lighter when I remembered that I’d got the e-Smokes with me. I put it to my lips and tentatively inhaled. And it worked. This was a relief, because the last thing I need at 5am is a faulty smoke.

Now, the taste wasn’t exactly like my regular brand. It was a bit sweeter, I guess because there was no ash in with it. But the taste difference wasn’t really any different from switching brands.

After an hour the orders were filled, the trucks were loaded and I was feeling around my pockets for my pack of smokes, hoping I didn’t crush them like I sometimes do. Shortly after that I was out in the middle of the city making deliveries, and it was a busy day. It was such a relief I didn’t have to think about it or do anything different. It just fit right into my normal schedule.

The eSmoke definitely passed the work test. Even my coworker who had the bad experiences with another brand of electronic cigarettes decided to try it, and he’s happy with them, too.

When I got back home after my shift, my girlfriend gave me a hug and kiss and she was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t reek from smoke. Even still, she was a little hesitant to let me smoke inside. It was probably because I’ve never smoked in our apartment before.

But I proved to her that the vapour doesn’t smell by first smoking in the doorway. And then the entry way. And finally the living room. She’s never complained of any odour, and we don’t need to worry about smoke staining the walls or stinking up the furniture.

I’ve totally switched over now from regular cigarettes to eSmokes, and it’s pretty great. I’m really glad I took the chance and tried them. And my girlfriend is just as happy with the change, if not more.
