For work I do a lot of travel, and since smoking is being banned in more and more places, it’s getting harder and harder to get my fix while I’m “on the road”. So, I decided maybe it was time to give in and quit.
It when I was looking up smoking cessation aids that I came across ads and reviews for electronic cigarettes. While they’re not marketed for quitting, I’ve read some reviews that stated it’s helped some people do just that.
I decided to give them a try. The trouble now was figuring out what brand. There are a lot out there, and since none of my friends or family have tried them, yet, I figured I’d go with one that offered a free trial. That way at least, if I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t be out of my money and out of luck.
Royal Blues E-Cigarettes offered a free trial, I just had to pay for shipping. Since shipping would cost less than a pack of smokes, I figured it sounded like a good deal. They came in different flavours, but I decided to keep it simple and try the tobacco-flavoured ones, first. I figured it would probably be easier to fool myself into the switch that way.
When I got them in the mail, it was pretty straight forward. All I had to do was charge it and then use it. Piece of cake. I tried it and it seemed pretty decent, too. It felt and tasted a lot like a normal cigarette, so it didn’t feel weird smoking them. Next time I might even try some of the flavoured ones.
I got the e-cigarettes a few days before I had to go on another business trip. Usually the airports are the worst part of these trips because of how long it takes to get through baggage check and security before you even get on the plane. On overseas trips I sometimes have to go half a day or longer without a smoke.
I can’t even describe how much less stressful it was to be able to bring the Royal Blue e-cigarettes with me through the terminal and even on the plane. I purposely got one with a blue led, not a red one, just to reduce the chance of someone mistaking them for a normal smoke. As it was, I didn’t have any problems smoking them in the terminal or on the plane. I’d have to rank that as one of my best flights, yet.
From the airport I headed straight for the hotel. I’d made the reservations the night before for a non-smoking room. It was much nicer than the stale, yellow-stained smoking-permitted rooms I’d been used to. Plus, I didn’t have to worry about running outside for a smoke or on the balcony in the driving rain or the cold, just to avoid a king’s-ransom in fines.
The next morning when I went down for breakfast, it was the same. I sat and ate some eggs and bacon with a cup of coffee and a smoke. If there’s anything better than being able to have a smoke with a cup of coffee, I sure haven’t found it.
It was kind of funny, because through all this, it kind of reminded me of the days before smoking bans, only better. I could smoke when I felt like it, but because I wasn’t always thinking about when and where I was gonna be able to take my next smoke-break, I didn’t feel the need to smoke as much. And because I wasn’t smoking a regular cigarette, my hair and clothes didn’t reek of it.
I definitely liked the difference between smoking Royal Blues E-Cigarettes and normal tabacco cigarettes. While I still intend to quit, I think these are gonna make it easier in the meantime and make my work life much less stressful.
